Ubu Battle Armor

By Tomas J McIntee

ubucropped3.JPG (16362 bytes)The Ubu is a breathtaking experiment in battle armor mobility. Capable of speeds of nearly 60 kph on a level track and slightly less completely submerged, the Ubu can outrace nearly any other armored infantry unit in or out of the water. The UBU UMU is actually smaller and less powerful than that of the Clan manufactured Undine, but the small size of the Ubu allows it to achieve nearly twice the speed under ideal conditions. Between the small size, the unorthodox quad profile, and the stealth systems installed on it, the Ubu is easily mistaken for a large animal by careless mechwarriors.

The Ubu does, however, have substantial limitations. A single hit with a medium pulse laser will almost certainly kill the pilot. The Ubu cannot make the deadly swarm attacks mechwarriors fear. The small laser is its only weapons system, and is poorly suited for anti-infantry work.

The physical arrangement of the Ubu is worth noting, and takes some getting used to. The small laser is mounted under the main body; this makes for difficult firing angles at times, but protects it from casual damage. The Ubu trooper actually lies on his back when piloting the Ubu on land, head towards the front of the mech; this requires some getting used to, as the display goggles mirror what is behind the pilot's head. The pilot's arms extend into the "thigh" of the front legs, and his legs are entirely within the Ubu's (which extend further).
