OVERVIEW

The TME-175 Oannes fission-powered Naval Fishing Supercarrier (WZ code "Special Duty Fisher" [SDF]) is one of the odder designs to come off of TME Industries drawing boards.  A hybrid between a jump-deck carrier, a fishing trawler, an amphibious assault ship, and a fish processing factory, the Oannes is a massive self-contained Cannery Row designed to fish constantly for months at a time.   A fleet of STOL cargo planes can keep the fish flowing from this oceanic factory, and its forty thousand tons of refrigerated cargo room can store the equivalent of 160 million fish dinners.

CAPABILITIES

The Oannes is powered by an ancient-technology uranium-fissioning reactor that only requires refueling once every fifty years.  This massive 27 thousand-ton drive is capable of pushing the Oannes through the water at over 50 kilometers an hour, a feat possible since the mid-to-late twentieth century.  Inside its cavernous holds it contains one ten thousand ton fish catching plant, one ten thousand ton fish processing and refrigeration plant, room for ten heavy airlifters or fishing boats, room for twenty small short-ranged aircraft or fishing boats, a thousand crewmen, and forty thousand tons of refrigerated cargo space.
A topside "jump" ramp can launch two fully-loaded STOL airlifters at a time, brought up by twin aircraft elevators amidships.  The landing strip can either catch hold of an aircraft using its arrestor cables or catch it safely with its polymer macrofilament cable nets.  The large eighteen meter tall conning tower contains the ship's control functions and crew quarters.
The Oannes is nominally unarmed but it does have the ability to mount up to six turrets with a total of two thousand tons of armor, weapons, ammunition, and turret equipment.

DEPLOYMENT

The TME-175 is extremely rare and only found on worlds with large fish-rich oceans.  The largest customer ever for the TME-175 was the ancient Terran Hegemony-breakaway Periphery colony world of Skjønn Hav, which had six of these massive vessels in 2758.

VARIANTS

There are not enough Oannes in service to warrant factory-built variants.  However, a scrapped redesign, the TME-175/a, would've upgraded the supercarrier to much more modern fusion technology and made it capable of carrying a large number of combat aircraft.
