Nonaligned Nations of Galactic Import


    While membership in the Weirdo Zone is open to all societies socially mature enough to join, some societies have refused to join while others were simply far too mercenary and unenlightened to be accepted into the Weirdo Zone.   Millions of nonaligned worlds exist in Weirdo Zone space, especially in the dark intergalactic voids.  However, some of these nonaligned worlds have created small nations of their own for defensive and political reasons.  This is a list of some of the larger and more important Nonaligned Nations that claim neutrality in the wars between the Big Three powers of our Universe.

INDEPENDENT STARS ALLIANCE (ISA)

    The ISA is a large conglomeration of star systems that have allied to maintain economic, political and military sovereignity from the Weirdo Zone.  Although created as a direct response to the Weirdo Zone's superpower status, relations between the ISA and the WZ are perfectly amiable and both parties see the other as a profitable trading partner.  The ISA is a loosely governed confederation, maning that each member star system has sovereignity over the minimal federal government.   The actions of the disparate local governments are channeled more or less successfully by the federal government into a coherent foreign policy.  In a similar way the local navies and militias of member worlds are assigned to the collective defense of the ISA by Centralized Military Command, an officer-heavy command structure dedicated entirely to the creation of effective border defense policy.  The ISA's military is purely defensive, with enough forces to act in border patrol, policing, and internal security positions.

LEAGUE OF TRUE EARTH COLONIES (TRUE EARTH)

    The League of True Earth Colonies is the intergalactic center of humanity's dark side.  Having a core constituency of ancient colonies formed in the first waves of interstellar colonization, True Earth initally formed as a rebellion against a seemingly corrupt Terran Dominon government in 2214 and successfully defended itself from attempts by Terran Dominion forces to bring it back into line.  As the Terran Dominion evolved, human-elitist and human-supremacist colonies and political factions found refuge in True Earth.   The formation of the Weirdo Zone caused the largest wave of dissidents emigrating to the slowly expanding True Earth colonies but also spelled the death knell of mass emigrations from Terran colonies.  True Earth's political structure is based entirely on military power, with the general of the biggest army holding power through superior might.  Ideologically, True Earth claims that it holds the true beliefs that the rest of the human race has cast aside in its "dilution" through contact with other sentient species.  These "true beliefs" allow True Earth to justify constant raiding on Weirdo Zone merchant vessels and member worlds as well as terrorist plots against the Weirdo Zone.
    While True Earth is not a credible threat to the existence of the Weirdo Zone, it is a definite annoyance because a) it can only be conquered (and thereby removed as any sort of threat whatsoever) through the genocidal destruction of its intractably bigoted population, which is far to repugnant even to consider, and b) its constant terrorist threats take up a disproportionate amount of WZISS resources.

THE SOLITAH COLONIZATION REGION (SCR)

    The Solitah Colonization Region is a burgeoning star empire that lies on the southwestern edge of Weirdo Zone space.  Using primative interstellar travel technology (spacewarp drives, fusion insystem drives, rotating centripetal artificial-gravity hulls, etc.) they have managed to eke out a colonial state spanning only a region about 50 light years in diameter.  They are fiercely territorial and have rejected all Weirdo Zone offers of friendship and trade.  They are simply an isolationist culture that wants to be left alone.  The Weirdo Zone plans to acknowledge that wish.

ENCLAVE OF ODROMOS

    The Enclave of Odromos is probably the largest monastery in the history of the Universe.  An out-of-the-way little star system, it has been colonized by monks and nuns of numerous religions, all living peacefully in secluded low-walled villages called "Abbeys" (no matter the religion or size).  Arguably a part of the Weirdo Zone, it is considered an aligned state because it has no revenue to tax, no military to support, nor any need of a military or social programs to help it and therefore doesn't meet the secular requirements for membership.  The Enclave is protected by a highly religious knighthood of Paladins that patrol the system in deceptively small cutters, assisting vessels in need and directing merchant traffic.   Unable to take sentient life, the Paladins have a bewildering array of disabling, stunning, and disorienting weaponry that allows them to deal with aggressors with the minimum amount of force.  Many of the police chiefs in the Weirdo Zone have had Paladin training and are therefore experts in nonlethal applied violence.
    Odromos is quite friendly to the Weirdo Zone; for that matter, they are quite friendly to everybody.  They kindly chide Thaurian free traders about their abuses of religion and pity Reaver delegations in an equally kind manner for their lack of religion while, at the same time, respecting the Reavers' deep "humanist" traditions.   Odromos's exports consist mostly of afghan blankets, assorted sculptures, gardening handbooks, liturgical music, didactic treatises, religion-on-tape lectures, and surprisingly secular art criticism.  Space Observatory Optonomicon, a large space station at the nadir Lagrange point, is a Universally-acclaimed astronomical powerhouse.
